Stem Seal Testing for Severe Service Valve

Control Component Incorporated (CCI-Valve) was formed in 1961 by Richard Self, to devise and create valves for high pressure industrial and chemical processes, particularly liquid hydrogen and oxygen services. Due to the high value of products and services, CCI-Valve has become a world leader in the valve and flow control manufacturing industry. Imbedded in these control valves is a stem seal. The function of this seal is to avoid major leaks of fluid between the valve's stem and bonnet cavity. The current valve design used by CCI-Valve is liable to leakage at the stem seal. This lack enables the transport of fugitive emissions to the atmosphere. CCI-Valve is determined to correct this defect to provide a higher quality product to its customers. A team comprised of mechanical engineering students from the University of California Riverside was allocated to design a test rig that will help CCI-Valve test diverse stem seal designs. The significance for CCI-Valve to be competent to test stem seals effectively is critical to the development of the seals growth.
